Chapter 2, Exploring Your Personality and Major, Feb. 9-16

I was inspired reading all your blog posts on motivation.  Motivation sets the stage for success.  Many of you mentioned careers and the economy as motivators for going to college.  You are more likely to be employed and to like your career if you have an education.  One of the keys to success is what you do on a daily basis, so do a little of your homework each day and it all adds up to success.
Chapter 2 began with the Do What You Are (DWYA) personality assessment which has a 4 letter code used to summarize your personality type based on your answers in the assessment.  For example, my code is ISTJ which stands for introvert, sensing, thinking and judging type.

Posting 1:

Choose one of your letters and write 100 words about this aspect of your personality focusing on the positives of your type. Remember that one personality type is not better than any other.  Each type has different talents that can be useful in your personal or career life.  You may think that you are a combination of 2 different types.  It is OK to describe your unique combination.

Here is a sample of about 100 words:

Based on the DWYA, I am a judging type.  I know that this is true because I can only feel relaxed when things are orderly and organized.  I plan my work and think about priorities when managing my time which helps me to accomplish my goals.  I even plan out my vacations in advance and like to have everything planned so I can relax and have fun.  I have met some opposite types in my lifetime and try to appreciate their differences.  I have found that perceptive types can usually introduce an element of fun in the situation and they motivate me to be a little more spontaneous at times.  I’m still most comfortable with my plans and don’t like to change them.

Posting 2:

Read another student’s posting who has the same personality type as yours and write a response to their post.

Here is a sample response of about 100 words:

I am a judging type also.   I could relate to your need to be orderly and organized.  I generally plan my time and like to have all my things organized.  I get stressed when things are out of order.  I have also met some perceptive types and I have to admit that they drive me a little crazy.  I like your idea of appreciating their differences and just trying to have fun with them.  I know that these opposite types think I am too set in my ways.  Being a judging type has lots of positives.  I plan to major in accounting and this seems to be a natural fit for my personal strengths.

Just as a quick review, here is a brief definition of all types on DWYA.  Please review these definitions before you make your comments.

Introvert: private, likes quiet for concentration, likes to think before speaking
Extravert: social, likes variety, sometimes speaks before thinking
Sensing: works step-by-step, learns from experience, trusts what is concrete and certain
Intuitive: values imagination and innovation, focus on possibilities, creative and imaginative
Thinking: calm and objective, makes decisions based on logic, analyzes emotions, likes debate
Feeling: makes decisions based on personal values, values empathy and harmony, caring, emotional
Judging: orderly, organized, work first and play later, follows a routine, meets deadlines (Note: it does not mean to judge others!)
Perceptive: spontaneous, go with the flow, play first and do the work later, dislike routine, difficulty meeting deadlines

  1. Based on the DWYA I am a perceptive type. I tend to be spontaneous. I also tend to push any work we have off until the end. I’m hardly ever on time. I’m usually either really early or a little late. I am not very organized and I dislike routine. I am always open to new possibilities and I like to go with the flow. I change my goals a lot. I also like to work at my own pace. I am very easily distracted. The opposite types of mine can be boring at times but I also envy how they are always so accomplished. I like being the way I am though.

    1. Bases on the DWYA I am a perceptive type as well. I can agree and disagree with this on. I as well am easily distracted and can be known to change my goals. While I am in school I try to be organized and on time. The on time thing doesn't always work out, but I try.

    2. I am Perspective type not very organized, responsible but always running late and chancing last minute deadlines, I get distracted easily, taking this class has made me more aware of it , and with the help of the assessments my goal is to correct and change bad habits, and recognize my strengths.

    3. Knowing that you are the perceptive type is very valuable in that you can understand the good qualities and some areas where you will need to adapt to be successful in college as well as on the job. Schools and businesses are generally run by the organized judging types. You will need to learn to be organized and and get your assignments and work responsibilities done on time. I have met many successful perceptive types who have learned to be organized and still have fun and be spontaneous.

  2. Based on the DWYA I am the judging type. I am very organized, and this helps me with my job. Being organized is a must when doing an accounting job, and having multiple job duties, it is a must to be organized. I get very uncomfortable when my school work is all over the place, and when I come into work and my desk looks like a tornado hit it. I like to follow routines, and I work the same hours everyday. When I know I have certain deadlines for work I make sure to meet those either on time or a couple days before it's due. Although I am more of the judging type, I like to go with the flow when it comes to my weekends, beause it makes me more spontaneous.

    1. I am a judging type also. I love to be organized. I love knowing where everything is and knowing that I will not loose anything. At my work I really need to be organized because loosing a tool is a terrible thing. We put in place so many rules we have to follow to check out and check in to keep an orderly and organized work place. I also believe that being disorganized can cause stress to people. I agree when you said that you get very uncomfortable when your school work is all over the place because I get that too.

    2. I'm a judging type also.I feel more comfortable when things are decided, .Also, I don't like to sit around and ponder or debate, quickly come to conclusions. I like to figure out what the action plan is and have a plan and a schedule.Moreover,to-do lists is my specialty ,and might be an organization as you mentioned . I like when you said ,you meet those either on time or before. I can imagine how those were felt comfortable and respect you. Like you, I hate being late, so I build extra time in my schedule for unforeseen delays.

  3. Based on the DWYA I am a judging type. I try to be very organized because in my job I can not afford to loose anything. I work on planes so if I loose a tool we have to stop every plane and find the tool. If I am not organized people could die. I also follow the work first play later type of work. I cant relax until the work is done. For my job I need to meet deadlines in order to keep the schedule on track. I tend to work very fast to keep up the deadlines.

    1. I am judging type also. It is good to be organized in your job, because it also makes your lifestyle organized, which decreases stress. For your line of work, I am glad you are organized, because you have peoples lives in your hands. I am also the work first play later, because it makes it even that more enjoyable when you're doing something fun. I also tend to work very fast to keep my desk clear and keep up with the deadlines.

  4. Based on my DWYA I'm a judging type. .I like to have things decided, and make lists of things to do.I like to get my work done before playing, so I plan work to avoid rushing just before a deadline.Sometimes I focus so much on the goal that I miss new information. I seem to prefer a planned or orderly way of life,Also, I like to have things settled and organized. The most important thing that, I feel more comfortable when decisions are made, and like to bring life under control as much as possible.

    1. Based on my DWYA I too am the judging type (ISTJ). I like to have things organized and well planned out like you. I use my IPhone to it limits. I set reminders; I have a white board with a to-do-list. I consider myself very responsible, dependable and make good on my promises. I feel much better knowing that things are planned, on track and take my goals seriously. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy life but need to know and feel everything is in order. I don’t have OCD I just need people to know I have a plan for my life.

    2. I am also a judging type, people may say I am boring because I like a routine. At times I may agree with them, I'm not comfortable trying new things. That does not mean that I won't try them, just means that I will be hesitant to try it. I like sticking to a schedule so everything will go with the flow. I don't like being late for school, work, appointments, or anything that is important. Being organized will help and make life easier as an adult. It is good to have list of set goals, so that you can remind yourself when things get tough that you are working for a purpose.

      Delete
    3. I am also an ISTJ and can relate to many of your descriptions. I can relax when all my work is done and really enjoy the reward of relaxing when things are done. Just be careful because sometimes it seems like the work is never done.

  5. The first description of my personality type is introvert, which I agree with. I am more of the silent type unless you know me. For example in class I keep to myself unless I have a question and I don't have a ton of friends; just few close ones. The next type is sensing which I can agree with for the most part. As much as I do like using my imagination, when I have a busy schedule I like to plan and do things step-by-step. Now this next type does not match me at all, feeling type. I am quite the opposite, and would categorize myself in the thinking type, "calm and objective, makes decisions based on logic, analyzes emotions, likes debate." I feel I could go either way with the judging and perceptive type.

    1. I also keep to myself during class. I don't like to be the center of attention and when you raise your hand everyone turns to look at you. It makes me very uncomfortable. It takes me a while to develop very close friends who I share important things with. I feel that it takes a while to get to know someone else also and I am not comfortable opening myself up until I feel like another person is real with me.

      Delete
    2. I relate on keeping to myself in the classroom, and I think it often gets misinterpreted by people. I don't have very many friends, but I don't see this as a flaw, but as something that is comfortable, rather have time to myself, than have to give attention to others. I also don't open up to anyone really, and I think its hard to relate to people who are very extroverted since its hard to carry on a conversation.

      Delete
    3. I also feel that one of mine were wrong. It said that I am an extravert. I can be when I get to know people, but when I don't I am usually quiet and keep to myself.

      Delete
    4. Taking an online class is a great choice for introverts. You have the time to think about your responses and have more opportunity to participate. Introverts are a minority in our society and for this reason some think it is a disadvantage. Being an introvert myself, I know this from my own experience. However if you think about careers, there are lots of good paying occupations where being quiet and being able to focus are an advantage. Some good examples are engineering and accounting, but there are many others.

      Delete
    5. I also keep things to myself in class because I don't like when the focus is on me. I'd rather just sit back and listen to what everybody has to say. I will only comment on something if the teacher tells me to. I like to do my work in the library where there is peace and quiet. I get a lot of my work done in the library because it is a great working environment. I also like to think things through before I make a decision and decide what I should do carefully because I want to make the right move.

  6. based on my DWYA I am the judging type, I like getting things done in a timely matter. I don't like waiting until the last minute to complete things. For the most part I am organized, I pay all my bill early and more than what is required. I don't enjoy not planning things, especially important ones. I take my time and pay attention to small details. I like to focus on one project at a time and it is important to have my priorities in line, so I can get my work done first and then enjoy my free time.

    1. Yeah the same for me, I like to be organized and have my things the way I want them to be, because for me I am able to respond accordingly. I tend to follow similar routines so I don’t misplace things and it just makes life a little easier. For me I am more successful in school because I like things to be done orderly. I like getting to places on time so then I am able to prepare for whatever I need to do. This to me is a positive attribute because I won’t miss anything and I will obtain all of the information.

    2. I am the same as your personal type, everything should be organize, no late payments, dates or missing a meeting. I don't call an organize people as a routine, it's very important to schedule stuff to do and keep sometime to unplanned stuff, so in this way the life will go much better than wake up in the morning and start trying to remember what payments are due.

    3. i can kind of understand where you comeing from i wanted to laugh out loud litterally when i read your first line. ( your the judging type) i guess most people in this class can say dont judge a book by its cover and regret it. idk. good luck with those bills btw.

  7. Based on my DWYA I am the sensing type (ISTJ). I like to be very aware of my life. I feel that in today’s society you have to be very aware of your surroundings, personal relationships, social media, emails and just about everything. I don’t mean being suspensions of everything, but aware. I also feel I need have live life with a hands on attitude. Being hands on helps me have better experiences on life and help build my knowledge on all types of aspects my life. I’m not a control freak just need hands on person. Being a sensitive type does have its advantages and disadvantages.

  8. Based on the (DWYA) assessment, I am a Perceiver on a personal level. I do have a hard time meeting deadlines on due dates; for example, bills /payments I tend to pay late fees too often, and am not very organized. Every time I need to find an important paper or a passport or a mortgage document to turn in for an appointment I’m going crazy looking for it at the last minute. I like to be spontaneous, dislike routine, but in my professional life/ work I consider myself a Judging personality. I need order and am very analytical; I like to find new ways to solve problems, organized and meet deadlines, and like to follow routines.

  9. I am a judging type, I like to follow a routine that I have set up because it will cause me more successful in the end. I am able to adjust how I like things are done depending on if what I am doing will affect other people involved. For the most part I think there are effective ways of doing stuff and then there are not so affective ways of doing stuff, they may both get the job done but with things that I care about I always do my best to get it done the best way possible and try not to procrastinate.

    1. I definitely agree with this. I was put into the judging category as well. When it comes to getting things done on time and efficient, I couldn’t agree more. It is extremely rare for me to miss a deadline on papers or work. Furthermore, I agree that having a set routine is crucial on the road to success. Back in High School I used to do things in whatever order I wanted and did not have a set plan. I definitely remember being stressed out much more than now. Being in college has forced me to take my life more seriously and realize that I’m getting older. Being organized is a crucial part of growing up.

    2. I agree that learning to be organized is a crucial part of growing up. It is easier for judging types to accomplish and may be more difficult for perceptive types. Whatever you type, some organization in school and business is necessary to be successful.

    3. I do agree with being organized does help accomplish task more effectively. It helps me be less stressed in the tasks that I need to do and helps me stay on track on time.

  10. Based on the DWYA, I am a sensor type. When it comes to my work skills. I am always trying to improve myself and grow. However, if necessary I am willing and able to learn new skills. However, I would rather become great with my current skillset than be average with a wide variety. However, I still don’t feel comfortable categorizing myself as entirely sensor only. For example, I enjoy working with ideas, I enjoy finding creative solutions. Overall, it is natural for me to do what I know best. I have grown up my entire life relying on my senses, it is most easy for me to rely on this skillset.

    1. I am also a sensing type, but still use my intuition and value my creativity. I focus on the here and now and take things step by step. I know some intuitive types that are always looking toward the future and creativity comes more easily for them. One approach is not better than the other; it is just different.

  11. According to the DWYA report I am an introvert personality. This describes me very well because I am very quiet and reserved. I feel like I am extremely introverted because I will leave a situation if there are too many people so I can collect myself and have a second to think and recharge. Sometimes I think that this makes me appear very withdrawn and antisocial because I feel more comfortable taking in my surroundings. I don’t tend to raise my hand in class or partipate in group discussions even if I have ideas. I tend to not join study groups and find the answers to my questions on my own. Although I am very quiet I always have things running through my head and express them creatively in my projects or hobbies.

    1. I can totally relate to needing to recharge. I have a large family and now that all of us siblings and cousins are older our family reunions are huge. I always take a minute or two to when ever I can to collect my thoughts. I find that being reserved can be a bit of a strength though. I find that when I have something to say people around me pay attention whether it's in class , at work or at home. Whether it's in surprise that I spoke or that I'm saying something profound still remains to be seen.

      Delete
    2. I am also an introvert and I have to try to act like an extrovert in social situations. I find this stressful and tiring. I am much better at writing as a form of communication. This is an advantage in an online course.

      Delete
  12. I would say that I 'am sensing and judging personal type. I like to do stuff that are 100% certain, also I don't like to do crazy adventures because I don't like to fail, I have got a good experience from my past crazy adventure. Also I do feel that I am Judging, because I can feel that I am not a routine person, I just mostly like to make everything perfect and organized. Also I can give a tip to solve a problem or conclude a problem that facing me or a friend has.

    ReplyDelete
  13. According to the DWYA report my personality type is an ENFP. This is very suiting for me. I thrive on adventure and can't stand the so called " daily grind." Out of all the descriptions, I hold true to intuitive. I always look for ways to improve things and usually have my wheels turning so to speak. Daydreaming comes along with being intuitive, which has definitely gotten me in trouble. It's very hard to focus in a classroom, which is why I like on-line classes, when my mind drifts off I can scroll backwards and not miss the lecture!

    1. Some of my good friends are ENFP's because they are my exact opposite in personality type. They encourage me to have adventures and fun.

  14. According to the DWYA, I am introverted. I am most comfortable in a setting with few people that I know, and I prefer time by myself on my free time. Being introverted, I prefer no to be the center of attention, but in class when they want you to group up, and I work alone, it probably comes across as odd, and draws more attention to myself than I would like. I like to keep to myself, and not disclose my personal life to others, and its not that I am shy, I just prefer to keep to myself. Relationships can be tough, they can confuse the alone time with not wanting to be around them which is not the case. Being introverted I find uniqueness in not needing other people to define how you act.

    1. Being in an online class is good for the introvert. In my face to face classes I always try to encourage the introverts to participate and it is difficult. I don't have this problem in my online courses.

  15. I was not too surprised to see my results stated I was an introvert. I prefer to work alone and or in small groups. I am by far someone who loves "glory". After taking this test I can appreaciate both sides, and can see where tapping into to both can be helpful. I think its important to be able to go with the flow as well. For example as much as I dont like to speak in front of others, if the cause is important and I believe I can contribute something importan or positive, I will contribute to the discussion. However if its just me wanting to get the last word in on something that I may now know enough simply to be having an opinion on, I have no problem sitting back and remaining quiet. While I enjoy working alone I also can work well with others again depending on the situation. Another example a fundraise for work. This takes many individuals to pull a great event off! I cant do it all alone, some good teamwork is needed! Overall I am happy with the resulsts and how it fits in with may career interest. I believe I am on the right track.

    1. In accomplishing any task, it is good to have a group of people with different personality types because you have a variety of personal strengths need to accomplish a task such as fund raising. Also sometimes we have to act in a way that is opposite our personal preferences such as in public speaking for an introvert. This can be done. It just takes more effort.

  16. I'm a thinker, I read that and realized I was already doing something thinkers do which is analyze. I was analyzing my self to see if my personality type matched who I was so I wasn't very surprised. I tend to also apply logic to nearly every situation, nearly every problem. I find that most obstacles I encounter I deal with them like a puzzles. These skills have become a very large part of me over the years and find that they come in handy at the oddest times, During last years blackout we were with my parents while everyone was wondering or panicking over the fact that we didn't have power, I started looking for flash lights and water bottles. My wife is a feeler and while we have our differences she keeps me grounded and reminds me that sometimes I need to put the logic aside and just let my heart do the talking. I also remind her that it's ok to take a step back and analyze a situation.

    1. Your posting is very insightful. There are lots of advantages to being a thinking type. They often end up in high paying occupations dealing with math or science and can be counted on to figure out solutions to problems. What is most impressive about your posting is that you realize that you sometimes have to put logic aside to have good relationships with feeling types. We can learn from our opposite types. It just takes some understanding.

    2. I am a thinking type as well. I also try to approach every situation logically. I find that my skill as a thinker has come in handy many times as well, but sometimes it gets me in trouble in social situations. Like your wife, my friends will try to keep me from having a closed mind and to use more of an empathetic approach to things.

    3. I am also a thinking type. I agree with everything you said about dealing with different situations. The blackout was amusing to me. I grew up on the east coast and we lost power all the time. In fact, I spent 5 days with no power in Michigan this Christmas. There are certain things that needed to be done in order to stay warm. We built a fire and made sure to keep it going for the whole 5 days. I am a big fan of logic and felt like this description is based on the belief that things happen for a reason and there are solutions to problems.

  17. Personality Type Report explained me to be an INTP
when i took this survey i was kind of skeptical about how it was going to rate me or how i was going to be described. i sort of felt like it was a very accurate example given the general questions it was asking the students. what sparked my interest was the majors and career selections that the job had given me. By far my favorite part about the whole assingment is when they had brought up my negotiating style. This description could have the best way to have me understand why i love to debate certain things with my peers about simple little things that happen through out my day. i would consider myself a very good negotiator but at the same time i still have alot of learning to do. i would really base this personality test around the Thinking and Feeling right under it as my second choice.

  18. I got extroverted although what's interesting is that I more so agree with introversion. But I still for the most part agree with extroversion. I may have answered some questions of how I'm trying to develop myself as an introvert but because of my brothers and some good close friends, I've learned some strategies to be more extroverted. I do love to discuss what I've learned to others and I want to comuniate well and I'm very interested in learning about my friends. And yet when I do a hang out with friends, I feel more mentally exhausted and I'd prefer a down time of a month before I do a big hang out again. Its really confusing feeling like I'm both. I'm not particularlly sure which I am.

  19. Delia Najera-Lambert: I really understand what you mean by " I am by far someone who loves "glory"." or not wanting to speak in front of others. and yet I understand both, I feel. As someone who feels like I'm really in both categories, I feel that when I'm with a group of friends who has no particular "leader"/outgoing character, I get more excited and I try to lead and help everyone enjoy their time. But when I'm with a group of people who have one or more people who are more excitable and outgoing, I suddenly get extremely quiet and keep to my self. I solemly talk to others unless they initiate but when they do I get very hyper and happy. Really confusing.

  20. Hello Everyone...Based on DWYA, I am Extraversion type of personality. Extraverts enjoys being with people, are full of energy, and often experience positive emotions. They tend to be enthusiastic, action-oriented, individuals who are likely to say "Yes!" or "Let's go!" to opportunities for excitement. In groups they like to talk, assert themselves, and draw attention to themselves. They look for achievement between their friends and their environment. Also they want to try everything new they tend to move from one direction to another to create better way of living things. In addition they are very ambitious and they feel happy when they see others improving and they tend to help others as much as they could to make their family, friends, and relatives feel happy.

  21. Based on the DWYA, my personality type is Introvert. I like to do work on my own or with a couple of friends. I don't raise my hand in class even though I know the answer. When I have a question about the homework, I ask the teacher after class. I hate when there is a project that I have to present to the class because I get nervous that I didn't do it right. I don't like when the class is looking at me and judging my work. When I have a lot of work to do in a week for different classes, I work on one class each day.

  22. Based on the DWYA, my personality type is judging. I am very organize in everything that I do. I don't like to be a procrastinator and wait until the very last minute to do something. But I will take all the time I am given to finish a project. I make lists for tasks that need to be done or for another example, I will make lists for grocery shopping so I won't over buy. I am definitely a work first, play later type of girl because I know I wouldn't be able to play without working hard!

  23. Based on my DWYA report, i am a Thinking person. I am a very factual person. I put a lot of weight in facts and science. I try to make decisions based on the information I am presented and make the best choices. I can be stubborn when presented with another conflicting viewpoint on something, but i try to keep an open mind. Through my personal experience with people, i have learned to be a bit more understanding and open to different viewpoints, especially since most of my friends are felling type people.

  24. My assessment declared that I am an introvert. I did not have to take a test to know this. I am introverted by choice. When I was younger, I was extremely outgoing. During my time in the Navy, I realized that I was more content with being introverted. I enjoy being with small groups of close friends. I hate over crowded places or waiting in lines. I do not have a huge desire to meet new people and i prefer to not speak but rather listen when around new people. If it made me happier to be outgoing and trying new things, I would. It does not though, so I do not.
