Chapter 6, Managing Time and Money, March 10-16

This new chapter is about time management and is one of the most powerful chapters in the text. For this week's discussion, share one of your lifetime goals and describe the time management techniques you will use to accomplish this goal. If there are obstacles in the way, how will you deal with them?

For your second post, read another student's post and make a comment about it. Sometimes it is helpful to read about other students' goals and how they are managing to accomplish them. The first post can be longer and the second one can be shorter.

I will share with you one of my lifetime goals and how I used the ideas in this chapter to accomplish it. My lifetime goal was to write a book on how to be successful in college because I struggled as a young college student and learned how to be successful. Then I taught the topic for 30 years. I had some time off from work and set as my goal to write the text. I found myself distracted by things around the home. I would get up in the morning and exercise, make myself a nice breakfast, read the paper and do a few household chores. Soon the day was gone and I had not accomplished my goal. I decided to work on my goal first and then reward myself with exercise and other things that I wanted to do. It was just a matter of rearranging my tasks. I still found it difficult to get started. I used the idea of a leading task. I would just sit at the computer, fill my head with ideas and start to write. Then I would refine the writing the next day. Within 6 months I had the first draft of the text written. Today it is used in about 60 colleges across the country. The CollegeScope material is my latest project.

Ok, I have shared one of my goals and how I accomplished it. Now it is your turn. Tell about something you accomplished in the past or something you hope to accomplish in the future. See if you can use some of the time management ideas in the text.

  1. My goal is to become a manager or get a high position in a aircraft air frame mechanic career. The first thing I did towards this goal was to join the Marine Corps and go to school to become an aircraft air frame mechanic. Now I will get a degree in mechanical engineering. After getting a degree I will be out of the marine corps and now looking for a job. I will go for a Aircraft air frame mechanic job. When I get the job I will now work my way up over the years until I reach my goal of manager.

    1. Brandon I would like to thank you for your service as a U.S. Marine, also your career choice to become an Aircraft air frame mechanic/Manager is excellent. I would set deadlines for completing your educational goals and time to get additional FAA licenses or certifications. I would look into seeing if the GI Bill would pay for some of the fees for additional certifications. These credentials often improve a mechanic’s wages and chances for employment.

    2. Dear Brandon,
I really enjoyed reading your plan. II think being in the service is proof you know what hard work is as well as cimittment and dedication. You will be well prepared to become an Aircraft mechanic, as this will take hard work!! I like Olivia, would also look into what services assistance is available to you through you GI Bill. Best wishes to you !

    3. HI Brandon, your plan is such an amazing one and this country cannot thank you enough for putting your time and effort into this. You seem so dedicated to accomplishing your goals, which is definitely a trait you want to pursue in. If any obstacles get in your way, just take an extra step to figure out which part is important, and if there's something else you need to be more concerned about. Goodluck with everything!

  3. One of my lifetime career goals is to become a paralegal. My first step is to complete my Associates Degree this summer. My second step into this field is to join the U. S. Navy later this year as a Navy Yeoman and cross over into Legalmen after advancing to Petty Officer Third Class. Legalmen are the Navy's version of paralegals. My A. A. degree is important in the Navy because as a Navy Legalmen you are required to have an Associate’s Degree in order to advance in that field. I will be saving myself lots of time joining with my degree already in hand. I also plan on continuing and completing my education within my first four years while in the Navy in order to make other career possibilities a reality. As I progress in my military career I will look into further career opportunities in the legal field such as a lawyer or legal investigator.

    1. Sounds like you have a great head on your shoulders. Its awesome that you know exactly what you want to do and have already taken the right steps to get yourself there. Best of luck to you next year, keep up the great work.

    2. It is very good that you have a plan in mind while joining the Navy. I spent 5 years in the Navy, and I can not think of anyone that put a plan together like you have. My only suggestion would be to talk to as many enlisted people that you can, not just your recruiter. This may help you discover any obstacles that may lay ahead on your path towards your goals.

  4. To get through school is a goal of mine, and to get the best grades possible.
This semester has been one of the hardest semesters that I've taken. Last
semester I tried taking accounting online but couldn't find enough time in a
week to accomplish all the assignments due each week and ended up dropping it 6
weeks in. This semester I am attempting to do it again, but with a teacher who
meets once a week. It is much better being able to have someone there to ask
questions. It is still the same amount of homework due each week, but I am doing
much better at planning ahead and managing my time. I am taking 16 units and try
to divide my days up for each class. Fridays I try to get my counseling homework
done, Saturdays and Sundays I pencil in accounting, and throughout the week I do
my English and any other hw I have. Unfortunately I have near to no social life, but I have to keep telling myself that this is temporary and it will pay off in the future. With managing my time I have been much more successful this semester.

    1. Following any course of study is not always going to be easy. In fact, there may be times when you wonder what possessed you to start in the first place - and you may even feel like walking away from it all. Every student at some stage feels like this. If you have in place good coping mechanisms and study behaviors, they will see you through the rough times until your enthusiasm returns. The most important thing that ,you are doing much better at planning ahead and managing your time to make it easier for you to succeed in completing the course, and to make the learning more enjoyable for you.So good luck in your study .

    2. Kaila I definitely agree its very difficult to have no social life! I've found that I am learning so much more and my grades are better now that Iv'e made school my top priority. I had thought in the past that I could balance a full course load and a full social life but there was never a balance. I feel so accomplished when I've had a jam packed study weekend, and when I get ahead on my assignments.

    3. Managing your time with your assignments is a good skill to have. Prioritize the things you need to get done first and be aware of due dates. After you are done with your work, then you should try to find some free time in your busy schedule because it is always good to have a break occasionally. Set goals each week, so you can work towards your lifetime goal or career. At the end, it will feel rewarding once you are all finished.

  6. My life goal was to be an English teacher because I loved my English teacher when I was in high school. Till now I remember her and I wish to meet her . She was young ,so elegant and speaks English and French fluently . I always like whatever she wears , from dresses to accessories. I 'm working now to achieve my goal by believing in myself is the step in maintaining my commitment and effort. Thinking positively ,increases my confidence, makes studying easier, all these help me to make my goal increase my chances of success. Also, develop and sustain a positive attitude to reach my goal.

    1. I also had a teacher that really inspired me to do what she did, as a history teacher. I did not end up going that path, but that is great that someone could inspire you to become what you want to be. Thinking positively will definitely get you to your goal, just got to keep taking the classes and not giving up on yourself.

  7. It has been my goal to receive my degree. However it has been a challenge to balance work, school and leisure activities. The last few years of my college career have been the most successful and I have had to make studying my first priority. It has been hard to stay home and work on homework while everyone else is out having fun. Many times I have had to turn my phone off so I wouldn’t have the temptation to call someone or check what my friends are doing. Sometimes after a long day of work I’m so tired I can’t see straight but I’ve had to make myself at least read a chapter, or recopy my notes. My lunch breaks at work have also become study sessions if I know I won’t have a chance to study that night. No matter what, I’m always rearranging my schedule to accommodate my studies. Each day I’m closer to my goal and that gives me the drive to keep my studies a priority.

    1. I agree, it is challenging to balance school and friends, what I have found to be true is when I am doing well in school I am more excited to get to class and learn more because of the previous success that I was having and I keep wanting to have that feeling of success.

      Delete
    2. You have made an important point about each day being closer to your goal. Big goals are accomplished in small steps. I know you will be successful in achieving your educational goals since school is a priority.

    3. I understand how difficult it can be to balance work, school, and a social life. Sometimes I find it's important to take a small amount of time, even if its just an hour, to do a leisure activity or spend time with friends. Then I don't feel like I will burn out from so much studying. I agree with Billy Rayl, in that when you do well you are more excited about school. Sometimes thinking about school like a game can get me more interested in doing well, to see what my abilities are and push my limits.

  8. My lifetime goal is to me a sports reporter. I am taking twelve units and I am studying a lot more than what I did in high school. To execute this goal I have to have a bachelors degree. Time management techniques I will use is doing things step by step and early. I will also take a break when things get overwhelming so I can get my energy back. The obstacles that are in my way are that the work is to hard and most of the day I have to do work. Sometimes I have difficulty with the assignment and its tough to complete. I always have work to do so I have to put everything else aside and its hard when most of the time I'm doing work or studying for a test.

    2. I would say I am having the same problem when I have work to do and I have assignments due , and I usually have half an hour break, so during the break I start do part of the assignments or make a note about what I will do to finish later. This break would help me to get the advantage to finish the assignments or homework on time and I use the break to do homework and get rest .

  9. I will share with you one of my lifetime goals and how I used the ideas in this chapter to accomplish it. I was a boyscout a few years ago and I was struggling to earn my eagle rank. Everyone else in my troop had already gotten it, but I had fallen behind. I had to get multiple badges and complete my eagle scout project in a very small amount of time because my eighteenth birthday was coming fast. I worked up a calendar and scheduled major tasks I needed to finish. I broke the entire eagle scout project into parts. First I had to meet with the local council to discuss a community service project I could do. Then I had to create a list of materials I need, and go get them. Then the troop help me assemble the parts and then transport them. I had gotten my entire project done in a little over two weeks, when most people take months to finish theirs. I had gotten all of my badges weeks before I finished my main project. I only had a few so I worked hard with a couple of scoutmasters a few days out of each week and obtained the badges with no problems.

  10. I have had a goal of totaling 1,500 pounds in a powerlifting meet. A few years ago, I decided to focus my training around powerlifting. This changed everything about how I trained. There was only one goal, lift more weight. For whatever reason, I decided that 1,500 sounded like a good number. A total consists of the best of three lifts added together. The lifts are squat, bench press, and deadlift. The lifts are judged and each competitor gets 3 attempts at each lift. The problem has always been that I do not have the time to take a weekend and travel to where a meet is being held. Finally, AAU is holding an event in San Diego this October. I have begun a plan to prepare for this event. After yeas of training and trying to figure out what works best for me, I now have to put it together in a plan leading up to this meet. My strength varies throughout the year depending mostly on outside sources. Work, school, and family can sometimes take up all of my time and to be at my strongest I need to stay consistent. Right now I am focused on getting conditioned up until around twelve weeks until the competition. At this point training will become an A priority as I try to peak my strength for the day of the competition.

    1. As a fellow weight lifter, I was happy to see this post on here. I am rooting for you man, keep up the good work. I know how difficult it can be when the outside world conflicts with weight lifting, and it is always a huge struggle when you only make very small improvements. However, it sounds like you are very dedicated to this and will be attending that AAU event. I don’t know how much spare time you put into fitness discussion and research, but www.reddit.com/r/fitness is a really interesting site with a lot of great people and information. There is even a lot of funny stories from gym go-ers on there.

  11. A life time goal that I have in mind is the ability to be cost efficient when it comes to food. What I mean by that is avoiding eating at restaurants and fast-food because to me it can be a giant waste of money and moreover not healthy as well. What I like to do is to go to the grocery store and shop smart. Being able to buy good and healthy food that will be less expensive and to make things ahead of time and to save it in the refrigerator. To me this is what I would consider smart time management and a healthy lifestyle because you are planning ahead your meals ahead of time and saving money.

    1. I believe 100% on saving money when you plan your healthy meals ahead of time.
The biggest advantage of making your lunch or dinner is that you know you are eating healthy, fast food and the majority of restaurants do not provide the correct nutrients your body needs to learn to have vitality and energy, fast food could be filling or satisfying but not healthy, Cuyamaca has a farmers market on Saturdays maybe you could try the fruits and veggies from them, I think it’s so great that you plan to make your own food, good luck and congratulations on taking a great step toward living a healthy lifestyle .

  12. One of my lifetime goals that I achieved was doing a long distance bike ride without giving up. After months of training with my teammates, we decided do the Bike For MS. This was a two day bike ride for a total of 150 miles. Not only did we get a raise money for this great cause, we all got to ride a 150 miles on a road bikes down the coast. After the first 25 miles, I didn't think that my legs could make it, but I kept strong and finished out the whole ride. I couldn't wait for about a week, my knees were filled with fluid and my legs were in extreme pain, but I know that people that deal with MS are in far more pain than what I was feeling. I finished the whole ride, and it was definitely a great accomplishment.

Keep up your hard work because I know I could never do that.

  13. This coming Sunday is my sons birthday so I will plan ahead and prioritize my whole week so that I spend enough time studding and completing my education plan that is due on the day of his birthday, I have classes every night until 10 pm and work from 9 to 5:30pm Monday to Friday so at times it is a bit hard to get home and study but with the understanding of this new chapter about managing your time and the techniques I will start this Monday to apply them and see how it work out I found very interesting the ABC’S of prioritizing my activities , my goal for this week is to complete all homework no later that Saturday at 2 or 3pm and that way I will attend family and complete school projects in a timely matter and not stress out at the last minute , after completing this chapter I noticed way too many things I have been doing incorrectly managing time, I plan to create a schedule and prioritize.

My goals from this semester is getting A's in most of my classes to be able to transfer for next year. So I am working hard to divide my time during the week to study and do the homework , because I work at the weekend . The obstacle, which I am facing , when I get a call from my work during the week to cover one of the employee , it's the tough phone call for me, because each Sunday night I do a schedule for what I have due this week and start doing it during the week, when I am getting this "tough" call I usually do the assignments at night or wake up early to finish it .

  15. I am thankful to be able to be going back to school and work on a big goal. I believe it is the right time, as I have been able accomplish some other iimporgtant goals. I have been able to raise three wonderful kids, all doing well in school. My husband and I own our home and a small business ,which was a very important goal to leave something behind for our kids. While these goals are great, they have involved my family and now its time for me and a personal goal. I want to earn my degree and become a Social Woker. I have been lucky to be able to work helping those underserved for over fifteen years ,and have had great jobs. However the degree has always been the one thing lingering over me. I believe, while I am a good worker , I can be an evern better one, once I have a formal education to go with life experience. I am very dedicated and goal oriented. Once I set my minds to something I give it my all. My education will be no different. It will take dedication and commitment . I also have a wonderful support system at home, my family!

  16. My life-time goal right now is to be a successful parent. To me that entails many different areas one must be successful. I want to raise a happy, healthy, independent daughter. Which means I need to be those things myself. I've got the healthy, happy part down, now it's being able to put her through extra-curricular activities, buy her a car and college which is going to cost me an arm, a leg, plus my soul, so to school I go Luckily I have at least thirteen years to get this done. Although I have several different traits such as an Esthetician License, as well as care-taking, they aren't stable or solid. Hopefully my decision to go to school pays off and I can rest assured knowing no matter what my baby is well taken care of.

    1. I can definitely relate to wanting to be a successful parent. A large part of the reason I'm here is my daughter. She's a year and a half old and I've been doing allot of looking at the future lately. I know these first years are pretty critical so I'm going to have to do quite the balancing act for a few years to make sure I spend enough time with her. I want to be able to be an example for her when it's time to choose a career and go to college.

  17. One of my lifetime goals is to become a lifeguard, and I’m almost there. In order to accomplish this goal time management is a huge necessity. I have already filled out the physical requirement, I have already completed the physical challenge, and I have completed the interview. I am currently in the process of waiting to hear back from them. Overall, if I do get into the academy, I must dedicate a large chunk of my time to studying and preparing for that. This will weigh into my time for other activities and whatnot, therefore I must learn to balance my time when it comes to accomplishing this goal.

  18. At the end of the day I want to be Happy, I want a career that I find interesting fulfilling and fun. If I'm going to have to spend one third of my life or more working then I might as well enjoy it. To achieve this I'll have to go to school. I'll need to balance school work and family. I don't do well with schedules so I'll have to prioritize my time. I want to make a checklist for the week of the things that I have to do every week homework included. Work won't be on the list because working is a given. I'll put my chores including homework. I want to budget my time so I can maximize my time with my family on the weekends as well as leave the weekends open to do anything I can't do during the week due to unexpected things.

  19. One of my lifetime goals is to be an Abroad English Language Teacher in either Korea or Japan (at best on the couples program with my boyfriend.) Some short term goals to slowly reach my ultimte goal would be: tutor ESL kids/young adults while in school, get any bachelors degree and apply for the programs. I would on the side need to be able to afford paying for the program initially and then have enough saved for when I am there. Some time management techniques are the regular keep a schedule for each day and each week for what tiny goals I need to reach; create tiny goals based on the days, the weeks and by month; save money from babysitting until I can get a job to save more. Obstacles I could meet are the fact that I just can't get a job. Typically its my parents getting in the way or I'm not applying enough. I just need to be positive and keep trying. I need to not give up and keep striving.

So many schools have ESL programs and working for a school will open so many different doors. Good luck on your journey but i'm sure your not going to need it!

  20. One of my goals is to receive my degree. I would have to say that striving to obtain this goal has had its journey in its own. Having to balance work, school family and friends. One of the hardest things is getting things started early so that I don't have anything or at least much to do that day. I have to make studying and school work my top priority. It's so hard to stay in on Friday nights while everyone is having a good time and I am at home doing school work. I have to remember that I am saving money by not going and investing in my future. At times I forget about assessments or even the blogs because I am so busy with other things. When I get into bed I realize I have assignments and have to get out of bed and complete the work. I just have to remember that each day is one more day that I completed and I am striving for the ultimate goal.

  21. one of my goals is to be financially stable. without having a sense of money management most people would crumble under excessive expenses. But before doing this achieving a degree can help boost the efforts in achieving my goal. At the time of transferring I found out my self so lazy to transfer to this major and my mind was telling me to return to my previous major radiologic technology and go for it whatever the consequences would be. 23. One of my lifetime goals is to become a hardware engineer for the NVIDEA. In order to accomplish this goal, I need to do well in a 4 year college. The obstacles will of course be difficult engineering courses, and I will have to learn time management skills to get through all these courses. For example, if I don’t have enough time to get all my work done in a given week, I could prioritize the most important classes first. If I have a lower grade in one class, it will become the highest priority. Some other things I find helpful are avoiding overloading classes, allotting more time than I think I need to complete assignments, and splitting large assignments into manageable chunks. It is also very helpful for me to study in an appropriate environment. Study groups can be helpful but often waste a lot of time due to people spending most of the time talking and not getting any work done. I think I can accomplish this goal because I am very driven to work for this company, and if at any point I get burnt out or become frustrated when trying to solve a problem, I will remember the big picture and this will help inspire enough motivation to finish the task at hand.

  24. A lifetime goal of mine is to become a teacher for elementary school, get married, have children and a long happy life. Becoming a teacher has been a little bit of a struggle because I have so many different obstacles in the way, including work, family, friends, and other distractions that tend to push me away from my future. I try to help myself stay away from obstacles by putting what is important first, and everything else can basically wait. If my friends would like to hang out, I finish my homework first and then enjoy my night. It gets a little difficult trying to put aside the more fun things to do in life, and focus on what is important and that's why I always make schedules of when I want to finish specific tasks and when I will have free time to spend with my family or friends. As for the problems that arise, such as small fights with the family or other minuscule things like that, I have been able to push it aside and not deal with it until I have time.
