Orientation January 27-Feb 2

Hello students and welcome to Counseling 120, College and Career Success! Take a look at my video introduction above.  Please make 2 postings this week.  For the first posting, introduce yourself by telling us about your interests, hobbies and what is important in your life and maybe share a photo or video of yourself. As your second posting, tell us about your educational journey, why you are taking this class and your goals and dreams for the future.  You can also comment on other students' postings.

This class is especially useful for those of you who want to understand yourself better and choose a major and career that matches your gifts and talents. The class also meets a general education requirement for transfer to state universities. If this is your first class in college, you are off to a good start. If you are a continuing student, there are some great benefits. You will become familiar with some new learning tools that will make your future education easier.

Since the course is online, you can do the work anytime or any place during the week. For best results, be sure to set aside time for working on this class each week and not wait until the last minute to do the work. I look forward to working with all of you this semester.

Marsha Fralick’s Introduction
Here is an example of a 100 word introduction:

I am your professor for Counseling 120. I retired from Cuyamaca College where I worked from 1978-2007 as a counselor and instructor for this course. I play many roles in life. I am a Grandmother with 2 young granddaughters. I enjoy taking care of them frequently and watching them grow. My own children are grown up and have their own careers and homes. I have my own business and work with colleges across the country in training faculty to teach college success courses.  I am also the author of your textbook.  In my leisure time I enjoy traveling and being active.  I traveled to the Greek islands, Turkey, Italy and Hawaii over the summer. It was great!
Marsha Fralick’s Educational Journey

Here is an example of a 100 word posting.
I attended a small country high school in New Mexico and was a good student. When I went to the University of New Mexico, I found that it was a whole new world and I was not prepared for it. I struggled to be successful in college and had to learn how to listen to lectures, take notes and prepare for exams. I also had uncertain career goals. When I started working at a college, I remembered those years that I struggled and decided to invent a course that would help students to be successful. It has been a fun and rewarding adventure for the last 33 years.

  1. Hello, my name is Blakely Wright, I am 24 years young who recently just got engaged. This is one of my last of two classes before I can finally transfer to a University, which I have been working on for quite some time now. I was pursuing my career in Nursing, but got very discouraged to learn about all of the waitlists with all of the class that I needed to take. I currently work at Jaguar San Diego, as Accounts Payable and the Warranty Administrator. I work very well with Accounting and Business Management, so I might go that direction with my career. I am excited to learn more about what I can make out of my career from taking this course.

  2. Introduction:

Hello my name is Randall. My current interests are sports mainly, I like to keep my body in shape as well as my mind. I enjoy books about true crime and also poems to help me gain inner peace. I figure that the more knowledge I gain the more my body can withstand. I'm fresh out of high school and know that its easier to keep going with education than to wait until I'm older and have less time to spare. I want to be able to help people that have been through similar experiences as me so I figured I might as well start early.I like to spend time with friends and family have fun and try new things. I skateboard bike and hike regularly.
    Education:

After I do these couple years in community college I would like to go to UC IRVINE to obtain my masters in child development. in doing so it would take me about 4 years, within this time span I would like to volunteer to work with local youth. In doing so I would gain experience in the line of work I really want to commit to. I want to become someone people could look up to as a smart young black man in America that's not just another statistic.

  3. Hello my name is Micheal. This is my first semester in college. I hope to transfer to University of Oregon after completing a two year college. The reason I chose U of O is because I have always been a Duck. I just graduated from East Mesa School with my GED. My educational goals are to get my masters degree in English so that I may be a writer and an English teacher in Russia. I would also be alright with teaching English here in America. As long as I am an English teacher and a writer I will be happy!

  5. Personal Journey:

Hello my name is Susan Powell. I was born in Texas but raised in San Diego. I'm just coming back to school after working as an Aesthetician as well as a caretaker for the past eight years. The most important thing in my life, or person shall I say, is my amazing three year old daughter Layla. We like to spend most of our time outdoors enjoying all of San Diego's treasures especially going to the beach, lake, or balboa park. Second most important thing now is school again. Layla keeps me pretty busy but when I do find time to myself I enjoy going to concerts, reading, hiking, or just catching up on my sleep.

  6. Educational Journey:

My educational journey has been rather rocky. I graduated High School in 2006 from Grace Christian School. It took three public High Schools for me to realize Home School was the place for me to go. I went straight into Cuyumaca where I quickly decided I just wasn't ready for college. I obtained my Aesthetician License in 2007 and have been working in and out of the spa industry since. I also have my certification in caretaking. I now have a Daughter and am trying to secure our future financially through my education. I hope that with this class I can find out what degree might suit me.

I grew up in La Mesa, so I attended Grossmont High School, and then came straight to Grossmont College. From there, I decided that I wanted to pursue my career in Nursing. After taking all of the science classes required, I had to go back to work, and got discouraged about the nursing programs. I decided to stick with my experience that I have most and that is in business. I decided after my journey at Grossmont College, I will transfer to CSU San Marcos to pursue a different degree that will fit my lifestyle.

I am 22 years old and a San Diego native born in Chula Vista, CA. I make a mean potato salad; I enjoy movies, video games and traveling. I traveled all over the country from Los Angeles, CA to New York and everything in between as a child with my family and have settled in San Diego to complete my education. I started college at Los Angeles Harbor College in Wilmington, CA in 2010 after completing high school in San Pedro, CA. My plans to graduate from Los Angeles Harbor College changed when we moved to San Diego, CA. Our move was due to my family being a military family. My father retired after 28 years of service from the United States Coast Guard. I started attending Cuyamaca College the summer of 2013. Happily, this will be my last semester before I earn my Associates degree. My plans are to join the military and continue my education while on active duty.

With the little time I do get to myself between school, basketball, and work, I enjoy relaxing with my boyfriend. This typically includes watching movies, playing with our puppy, or trying out all the unique restaurant San Diego has to offer. 19. Kaila Educational Journey
I graduated from high school in 2010 and moved to San Diego where my sister had moved two years prior. I started at SDSU and lived in the dorms. It just wasnt my style , so I ended up moving back home for a year to work and save money. In this time my sister and I went on a back packing trip through France, Spain, and Italy. This is where my passion for traveling sparked. I decided to move back to San Diego and give it another shot. I continued back at state, no longer in dorms though which I preferred much better. Later that year a coach had seen me play basketball and asked me to come try out at Grossmont. So I then began going to both school. Which brings us to today, where I am getting my AA degree this semester from Grossmont and hopefully transferring to a university next fall to obtain my BA degree in Business marketing while playing basketball for that school as well.

  20. Introduction:
I was born and raised on the streets of San Diego. At a young age I was introduced to some not so healthy habits, which ended up taking my attention away from school. Fortunately I’ve been able to get back on track and focus on my priorities. Being creative allows me to be innovative in school and in life; I also realized I like to draw. I am interested in the world and how it works. While attending Cuyamaca College, I want to expand my knowledge on the world and look into taking some art classes. I value education and think that there is always something new to learn.

  21. Educational Background:
Although I enjoyed school I got distracted in high school and ended up falling behind. Through a long and arduous process I was able to obtain my GED at Sierra Vista High School. I spent several months studying for the GED. I have enrolled in Cuyamaca College to further my education. My goal is to obtain my associate’s degree while attending Cuyamaca College. Furthermore, I hope to figure out what career path is right for me. Once I find out what career path to follow, I plan on transferring to UCSD in two year, so I can pursue my bachelor’s degree.

  31. Me in a Nutshell:
    Hi class,
My names Joel I'm a thirty year old husband and father. I'm originally from a small town south of the border but I moved to San Diego, CA very young. I work for a specialized transportation company driving a truck if you've ever ordered something that's too big for UPS or Fed EX to deliver we probably delivered it. Biggest thing I've transported is a Rocket engine, strangest was a frozen Giant Octopus, and the coolest was World war 2 Service bike. Aside from my driving I'm also a computer Technician part time for a small company and now a student. On my free time when I'm not chasing my daughter, I play the guitar, paint, write, and read.

    Education:
I graduated from Monte Vista High school in 2002 then I went to college right here at Cuyamaca for another year where I got my certifications to work on Computers but after working in the field a few years the company I was working for closed. So now I'm back at Cuyamaca, I plan on transferring to either UCSD or SDSU where I plan on getting my degree in Applied Physics or just me general Physics degree as science and technology have been a passion of mine my entire life.

  32. Hello everyone. My name is Jeremy and I am nineteen years old. I am an eagle scout and my favorite weekend activities are hiking and backpacking. I moved to El Cajon at the age of five though I was born in Escondido. I had a 4.125 GPA in high school and participated in the international baccalaureate program. I had never known what career I wanted, but was told throughout high school that I had more than enough time to figure that out; however, graduation day came and I was still unsure. Now I am trying to get some general ed done and attempting to find a career path to commit to. Right now I'm considering computer science and architecture.

  33. I attended Granite Hills High School and was in the graduating class of 2012. I aced most of my classes freshmen and sophomore year, so my councilor and a few teachers recommended that I participate in the international baccalaureate program. I did and it was far too difficult for me. I still retained a high GPA, but by the end of senior year I was overwhelmed with school work and became sick of school. I decided to take a year vacation before going to college and so I took a job at my father's shop. This is my second semester of college at cuyamaca and I hope this class will help me set up a career path that will lead me through my future education.

  34. I was born in New Jersey in 1983. Most of my family still lives there. I moved to Cincinnati, Ohio during my freshman year of high school. I graduated in 2001 and started working random full time jobs. After about a year of that, I decided to join the Navy. I served about 5 years. I had a good time, but had no desire to make it a career. Since getting out, I have attended a little school and continue to work at Home Depot. I got the job while i was still in the navy. The military pays extremely low when you first join, especially if you are single. I also recently got married. I now have two step children who are 9 and 13. If I have free time, it is spent at the gym or reading. I hope this class will help me decide what may be best for me with my educational path.

  35. My educational journey has been a little bumpy. I have never been a good student. I have always been good at standardized testing. This has allowed me to place very well beyond my study skills. I didn't join the Navy because i was a good student. I graduated high school with a 1.9 gpa. I think there is a guy in this class with a gpa that was more than twice that. At the moment I am attending school because I get the GI Bill. If I was not getting paid, it would not be logical for me to attend school. I am married and have bills to pay. It is nice to have the opportunity to attend school and i plan on making the most of it. Maybe this class will help me choose a path.

  39. I attended my high school back in Iraq, Baghdad. I was not interested in school and being educated after that I quit school and start working. It was a nice experience for me but after few years I didn’t want to keep getting 8 dollars per hours, so I decided to go back to the college and do some changes for my life. It was good experience for me and it helped me until today. Every time I remember the old days I get supper motivated and that is good thing. Now I’m working as a park time and I’m taking 17 units, so I’m pretty full. That’s true I don’t have time to go hunting or fishing but its fine 

  40. Introduction:
Hi my name is Jessica Habib and I am 18 years old. I have lived in California my whole life and I attended high school at Steele Canyon. I graduated from high school in three years by taking my senior classes my second semester of junior year. So basically I took my junior classes and senior classes together in one year. I don't like attending school because of all the work but I know if I try my best and achieve my goals I will be very happy in the future. My favorite things to do on my free time is go to the gym and playing volleyball, and basketball.
    Education:
This is my second semester at Cuyamaca and I plan on being here for one more year and then transferring to SDSU. I'm not sure what I want to major in but I'm debating on weather to major in business management or radiologist. I'm really interested in radiology but at the same time I want my own business in the future. So I might minor in radiology and still have my major as business management.

  45. My educational journey is to repair my current GPA given the values and morals being learned throughout the entire course and applying them to real life examples. some of the things that i wish to work on are the way i see things as a personal problem and overcoming them entirely so they don't affect me in the long run. With this being seen as a way to reflect on past experience and to grow from its immaturity, finding the right stepping stones is only the beginning.

  47. About myself,
Hello my name is Desirea I'm 23 years old I have lived in San Diego all my life, sometimes I would like to move but not sure where. I work full time and go to school Monday through Thursday. It's hard to manage going to school and work, lucky for me I'm not married or have children because then that would make things that much harder.

  48. About my educational journey:
well I graduated high school in 2009, moved out and went to Cal State San Marcos which was a good school, but unfortunately didn't stay past the first year. I felt like I wasn't ready for "school" so I took 3 years off and finally realized I was ready and I needed to go back to school. I returned last semester and only took 2 classes and now I'm taking 4 classes including this course. This is my first online class, I hope to learn many great things. I plan on transferring either back to CSUSM or SDSU, or who knows if I end up moving then the local university.

I lasted about seven weeks and "just didnt go back". I am excited about taking this course and learning all I possibly can! I want this at this point in my life, for one and only one reason...ME. In my spare time I enjoy jogging at the beach, riding my bike, gardening ( just started an herb garden ) and cheering on my kids at their games! I also am active in my church where I enjoy volunteering.Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

  51. EDUCATION JOURNEY

I always enjoyed school and had amazing teachers especially in high school. I graduated from Chula Vista High School in 1993 and as mentioned went to Southwestern for a short period of time. I have had the joy of seeing my two amazing sisters graduate from Universities. One is a LCSW and the other will soon be a Psychologist helping the underserved. I kind of always thought ....its too hard not for me. They have always been ,my biggest supporters espcially in recent years to go back to school and "get your degree in whatever you want!As silly as it sounds , the one thing I have always felt is just too hard for me is Math. I now see that as a challenge, one that I am ready for!! This is my first semester back in school. In addition to this online course I am also taking a Sociology class , which has been great so far.

  52. If my friend was going to a job interview, I would do my best to give them good advice. For starters being well prepared before they arrive. Do a little research on the company, this quite easy when all you have to do is "google". You can find out when they started the company , thier mission, and othe important things. I also think arriving on time is crucial, you never get another first impression. As easy as this seems I have seen great potential employees lose the opportunity because they arrived late. It is very unproffesional. I would also recommend to wear the proper attire. I am a fan of sandals and all however it is not what you should wear to an interview. I have also seen this happen where a "lazy" impression cost someone a potential job. Lastlt I would tell them to go with a positve attitude!

  53. Hello my name is Christian Arabo, I am 18 years old and have been working for about 5 years now. I began working as a volunteer at the sdpd sheriffs office. I went on many different ride alongs and saw some crazy things over the years. I then moved on to work at the neighborhood market association (NMA). The NMA is a non-profit mutual benefit corporation dedicated to empowering independent retailers all throughout California, Nevada, Arizona and the West Coast. I started this job as an intern doing mailers to all 3000 of our members. I then was offered the job for the assistant bookkeeper. after doing so well for over a year I was then moved up to the bookkeeper. I have now had 3 years of accounting experience and have enjoyed it ever since.

  54. As a middle school and high school student I was really into learning. I was a straight A student and always wanted to be an attorney. After I was moved up to Bookkeeper and office manager I then saw how much money I could make without any school experience. That was when I started to slack off at school. I later talked to a CPA and he showed me that I would never move up from where I was without a degree which is why I now take off more time at work to take more classes at Cuyamaca. After I finish all my general education I will move on to SDSU to receive my bachelors degree in business with an emphasis in accounting.
